Senior Engineer

As part of your role, you will  help shape the future of our digital news and media platform’s experience, building highly performant and decoupled applications that integrate seamlessly with our core publishing workflows through robust, well-defined API contracts.

The services you work on will impact how our people discover, consume, and engage with our content across platforms.

We expect you to be a hands-on, first-principles engineer equally comfortable building, mentoring, and working alongside in-house, distributed, and vendor teams.

This is a technical, high-impact role: you will write code, architect systems, and lead technical discussions, balancing individual contribution with true engineering leadership.. You will be responsible for how our services scale, how they integrate, and how they evolve as our audience grows..

Some of the many Engineering challenges you will work on include:

• The development of highly integrated services that extend our core publishing platform via strict API contracts. You will oversee systems spanning consent management, loyalty, identity/user management, subscription infrastructure, dynamic paywall packages, live events, and interactive games.
• Responsibility for system optimisation, SLAs around performance of various sub-systems.
• Delivery of high-concurrency and low-latency solutions, some of which work in real-time situations and handle high-volume transactions and sudden, real-world traffic spikes.

What You Will Do

• Design, build, and maintain real-time applications and robust, API-driven backend services.
• Act as a core individual contributor while leading deep-dive technical discussions, system design reviews, and code quality standards.
• Participate actively in cross-functional brainstorming and product ideation sessions to turn requirements into code.
• Lead and enable distributed teams, manage parallel workstreams, prioritise on deliverables and manage technical debt and active feature rollouts simultaneously.

What We Are Looking For

• Expertise in designing clean, scalable, versioned, and future-proof API contracts.
• A strong command of Golang and Javascript architectures, concurrency patterns, and performance tuning.
• Experience with building, deploying, and maintaining distributed, real-time applications under significant user load.
• Foundational engineering knowledge. You understand why a system behaves the way it does under load, and you do not rely on AI autocomplete or LLMs as a substitute for genuine system comprehension.

What we do not want

• Someone who spends time delegating assignments, reviewing progress, relying on AI tools to generate complete production-grade code.
• Some whose primary development workflow depends on AI code generation rather than deep, foundational engineering knowledge.
